AI Should Be Your Co-Pilot, Not Your Autopilot

Roderick Jefferson

If you’re reading this blog, you already know I’m a big advocate and user of AI, but let's get real for a moment. AI has fundamentally changed how we work. I use it every day to write faster, think through complex problems, and automate tasks that used to eat up hours of my week. It's incredible. But here's what I'm seeing going into 2026 that concerns me: too many people treat AI as the magic answer to everything. News flash… It's not! The most successful people I know aren't the ones who've outsourced their thinking to AI. They're the ones learning to blend artificial intelligence with the very human skills that technology can't replicate. Let me explain why. They’ve figured out that the “three-legged stool” in today’s world is IQ+EQ+AI.

Being successful in 2026 will require more than just technology!

Here's what I believe will help you thrive in 2026:

  • AI amplifies your abilities, but it can't replace your judgment. Yes, AI can draft that email, analyze that spreadsheet, or summarize that report in seconds. But it can't tell you whether you should send that email in the first place, or what the real story behind those numbers means for your business. Your IQ, your critical thinking, and your ability to ask the right questions are more valuable than ever. AI gives you speed, but wisdom still comes from you.
  • Emotional intelligence is your competitive advantage. While everyone else is using the same AI tools, your EQ is what sets you apart. Can you read the room in a tense meeting? Do you know when your team member needs support versus when they need space? Can you build trust with a client over a video call? These human skills create the connections, culture, and loyalty that no algorithm can generate. In a world where AI can do the technical work, the humans who understand other humans will win.
  • The best solutions come from knowing when NOT to use AI. I've watched colleagues waste hours trying to get AI to solve problems that could have been resolved with a five-minute phone call. Or use AI to write something that needed a personal touch. Part of being effective in 2026 is developing the discernment to know when AI helps and when it hurts. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is close the chat window and have a real conversation.
  • AI is only as good as the person using it. Two people can use the exact same AI tool and get completely different results. Why? Because one person knows how to ask better questions, provide better context, and refine the output with their expertise. Your domain knowledge, your creativity, and your ability to iterate matter enormously. Think of AI as a talented business partner who needs clear direction. The quality of your leadership determines the quality of the output.
  • Success in 2026 means integration, not replacement. The people crushing it right now aren't choosing between IQ, EQ, or AI. They're weaving all three together. They use AI to handle repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus their intelligence on strategy and their emotional intelligence on relationships. They're not trying to become more like machines. They're using machines to become more fully human in their work.

Here's my challenge to you: Audit how you're using AI this week. Are you using it to enhance your strengths, or are you hiding behind it to avoid the hard work of thinking and connecting? The goal isn't to use less AI or more AI. The goal is to use it intentionally, as one tool in a broader toolkit that includes your brain, your heart, and your humanity.

At the end of the day, AI might help you work faster. But it's your IQ that helps you work smarter, and the EQ that helps you work with others. That combination? That's what will make you more successful in 2026!

What's your take? How are you balancing AI with human skills in your work? Drop a comment. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! #IQplusEQplusAI #FutureOfWork #Leadership #WorkSmarter #2026Success #HumanSkills
